The Civil Air Patrol Aero Challenge is a unique venture which allows current CAP cadets between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in an annual national flight competition. The uniqueness of this program is the design of the competition which allows cadets to fly their model aircraft and participate from their choice location-No travel necessary!!! Results are entered via the internet and the prizes range from AeroRacers Inc. products to tuition scholarships from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Prescott Arizona.
The CAP Aero Challenge is comprised of two separate challenges, one for powered flight, and one for glider flight. Cadets may chose from either challenge, or participate in both!
Powered Flight CAP Aero Challenge
This competition is for rubber band powered aircraft provided through AeroRacers Inc. A fellow cadet or superior/adult must time your flights and report your best time to us via the internet. Times will not be visible to others until after the competition had ended. The Rules and Regulations section provides details on how to time your aircraft.
Glider Flight CAP Aero Challenge
This competition is for glider aircraft provided through AeroRacers Inc. A fellow cadet or superior/adult must time your flights and report your best time to us via the internet. Times will not be visible to others until after the competition has ended. The Rules and Regulations section provides details on how to time your aircraft.
You may hand-launch your glider from an elevated location however, the best results usually occur when using an appropriate high-start called "launch-it." When used properly, this type of launch is capable of starting gliders at altitudes in excess of 150 feet. Gliders can be a lot of fun and we encourage large flying fields (football-field) for these aircraft.
Notes for your Success
As you progress through this competition you will learn a great deal about how to successfully fly free flight model aircraft. Your general knowledge about aircraft and flight will grow while you have fun. A successful competitor will carefully build his/her aircraft, test fly in various conditions, and learn to use the climate, winds, and elevation where the aircraft is being flown to his/her advantage.
How the Competition Works
You will purchase your aircraft from AeorRacers Inc. at this website. All products marked with CAP have been reduced from their original price for CAP cadets. You will build and fly your aircraft in accordance with the rules and regulations. You may participate every year until the day of your 19th birthday.
Flight times will not be displayed until the end of the competition when winners are announced via the internet.
